Porting from iPhone to Airplay SDK… and onwards to 500m devices

Flook is the world's first location browser – a brand new application that lets you discover and share local secrets. Discover the world around you by swiping through a stream of nearby flook cards, browsing the world as easily as you browse your photo library. Sharing your favourite places is simple too – just take a photo, add some text if you like, then upload your card – flook automatically geotags it. Developed by Ambient Industries, flook went live on the iTunes App Store in November 2009.

Ambient Industries wanted to bring flook to the hundreds of millions of smartphones outside of iPhone, quickly and affordably. Airplay SDK was the natural choice. Janes Sales, co-founder of Ambient Industries, says, “By porting flook once from iPhone to Airplay SDK, we’ve saved months of painful per-OS and per-device work. But even more importantly, we no longer have to place bets on which smartphone channels will be most successful, as Airplay SDK delivers SKUs for Android, Symbian and others with a single-click operation.

Flook gives Airplay SDK a pretty good workout, making use of Airplay's UI framework (resizing nicely across all screen resolutions), GPS and touchscreen APIs, as well as downloading XML over HTTP and parsing via the Open Source tinyxml module. ”

José Carlos López, Technical Director at Virtway Software, said “Several months ago we made the decision to adopt Airplay SDK for the development of a next-generation social networking application for ICYOU, initially targeted at iPhone. We were amazed to see that, with a single click and without even recompiling the application, we were able to generate an Android build that runs beautifully on multiple devices. For zero additional cost, we can now target all Android devices, and that will certainly open up a huge additional market for our application”.
